2% Of National Newspaper ABCs Sold Overseas

ABC has today released breakdowns in the circulation figures for National Newspapers for UK, Eire and Overseas. This data is available for the 6 months January to June and also separately for June; future reports will also be issued only with the June or December end data.

The figures show that the popular titles sell less overseas than the mid- markets; these in turn sell less percentage of their totals overseas than the quality papers. This is true for both dailies and Sunday titles.

Populars

Of the average net sale for Jan to June for the popular daily titles, 0.8% or 62,473 copies were sold overseas; 2.3% were sold in Eire. The Daily Mirror has the highest overseas sales, 0.9% of its circulation. This is over 22,000 copies; the Sun, at 0.8% of its circulation sells over 31,000 copies overseas, and over 50,000 in Eire.

The average for all of the Sunday popular titles is 0.9% sold overseas and 3.1% in Eire; this is 91,000 copies and 303,000 copies respectively. Like its daily sister title, the Sunday Mirror sold the highest percentage of its circulation overseas, 1.1% in January to June; the People and the News of the World both sold 0.9%. However the figures for June are slightly higher, with the Sunday Mirror selling 1.6% of its total overseas and the News of the World 1.5%; this is 72,228 copies.

Mid-markets

Of the daily mid-markets, the Daily Express sold the highest percentage overseas, 1.6% and 0.3% in Eire for Jan to June. The Daily Mail and Today both sold 0.2% of their circulations in Eire; the Daily Mail sold 1.4% overseas and Today the least at 1.0%.

The picture is similar for the Sunday titles; the Mail on Sunday sold 1.3% overseas and 0.5% in Eire; the Sunday Express however, sold a higher 1.8% of its circulation overseas and 0.9% in Eire.

Qualities

A much higher percentage of the quality titles’ circulation is sold overseas. The title selling by far the most is the Financial Times, with 41.3% of its total circulation. Next on the list is the Guardian, selling 7.2%, or over 28,000 copies. The Independent sold the highest percentage in Eire, 1.5%. The Daily Telegraph sold the least of any quality title in percentage terms both overseas and in Eire.

Among the quality Sunday papers, the percentage sold overseas is generally higher. The Observer, like its sister title the Guardian sold a high percentage; 5.7% in Jan to June. The Independent on Sunday sold 5% of its total figure, and 4.0% in Eire. The Sunday Times sells the highest percentage of any national newspaper in Eire, 4.7%.

On average 4.5% of the Sunday qualities’ total circulation is sold overseas, and 3.2% in Eire, compared to 7.9% of the daily qualities overseas, and 0.7% in Eire.
