45% Of UK To Be Cabled By End Of 1996

According to new figures released by the Cable Communications Association, 1996 will see record levels of cable construction, with another 2.7m homes to be built past, bringing the total to around 9 million homes by the end of the year, or 45% of all homes in the UK.

The cable industry is set to invest £6 million per day during 1996, with total investment for the year reaching £2.2 billion; this will create 2,000 new jobs, said Wayne Gowen, chairman of the Association, speaking at the Sixth Annual Conference for suppliers to the Cable Industry.

“By the end of this year, with over £7 billion invested, half our licensed network will be in place. With an average industry penetration of over 30% of homes passed by cable taking either TV, telephone or both, that means close to a million new customers for cable during 1996.”

This optimism follows news earlier this month that the industry has formed the Cable Research Group (05/01), to conduct industry wide BARB style audience research. Results should be ready in March.
