60% Say Yes To Ads On BBC

Reader’s Digest has released details of a MORI poll it commissioned to examine the public’s attitude to the BBC. Out of a total of 2,012 adults questioned between January 21 and 25th:

  • 60% favoured replacing the licence fee with advertising as the BBC’s main source of revenue. This figure increased to 72% among the DE social groups.
  • 73% did not favour the proposed 24-hour radio news service. An even greater percentage (81%) disagreed with the notion of an all day television news station.
  • Despite recent events, 45% say they believe the BBC is a well-managed organisation.
  • 54% feel the BBC should continue to broadcast quiz shows and imported soaps. 65% say they should concentrate on programmes that inform and educate.

The poll has been timed to contribute to the Green paper debate, with National Heritage secretary, Peter Brooke, calling for all responses to be entered by April 30.
