According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, adults are increasingly using SMS text messaging.

In September 2009, 65% of adults sent and received text messages. This figure increased to 72% by May 2010.

The median number of daily texts sent by adults also increased, doubling from 5 in September to 10 in May.

The mean also increased, from less than 30 to 39.1.

The study also found that adults who did not text very often also made fewer calls.

Additionally, 57% of adult mobile users said they had received spam text messages.

Other findings include:

  • 51% of adults send 1 – 10 texts per day
  • 29% of teenagers send over 100 texts per day
  • Teenagers send a median of 50 texts per day
  • Black and Hispanic texters send and receive more messages on average than white texters
