Roku launches FAST channels in UK market
Roku is debuting 40 free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels on its UK platform in October.
The channels will offer UK viewers a wide variety of always-on streaming options at no additional cost on Roku devices. They will feature content spanning entertainment, lifestyle, true crime, classic TV and documentaries.
Channels include PGA TOUR, Old House, Unsolved Mysteries, NatureTime and Love Pets. They will be accessible through The Roku Channel and a new “Live TV zone”, available on Roku streaming players and TV models.
The aim, according to Roku UK country manager Richard Halton, is to provide new options for viewers and advertisers alike.
“With the launch of our first FAST channels in the UK this October, we’re giving viewers more choice than ever before — from iconic series and films to new favourites and niche genres — all for free,” he said. “It’s an exciting step forward as we continue to expand and open up new opportunities for advertisers to reach highly engaged audiences.”
Roku had previously rolled out FAST channels in North and South American markets.
According to recent Nielsen Gracenote data, FAST channels broadly offer more recently-produced content compared to subscription VOD (SVOD) platforms; nearly half of current FAST programming was produced in the last five years, compared to nearly one-third on SVOD.
Notably, documentaries accounted for the largest share on FAST channel content at 16.1%, followed by drama (10.6%) and news (9.9%).
FAST channel operators have situated the viewing format as a streaming alternative for those interested in specific types of content and those unable to afford rising costs of SVOD services.
Amid the growth in FAST channels, brands have also sought to capitalise on its potential by developing their own channels.
For instance, in April, FC Barcelona announced it was “tapping into the FAST ecosystem” to expand its brand presence and monetise its video content through targeted advertising.
