A Kick In The Teeth For Football

A Kick In The Teeth For Football

The Restrictive Practices Court is currently deciding whether the 20 premiership football clubs acted as an illegal cartel by negotiating a TV contract collectively. If it rules that the clubs have been acting illegally, the chief executive of the Premier League, Peter Leaver, claims that live coverage of football on TV in the UK could be under threat.

In this eventuality, Leaver told BBC Radio that he believed football could disappear from Britain’s TV screens because each club would be left to negotiate its own broadcasting contract. In his opinion, this would widen divisions between big and small clubs and create chaos throughout the league.
