A New Body Found

The Broadcasting Standards Commission came into being yesterday. The new body replaces the Broadcasting Complaints Commission and Broadcasting Standards Council and will combine their functions.

The BSC will investigate and adjudicate on complaints about fairness and unwarranted infringement of privacy, and about the portrayal of violence and sexual conduct and other matters of taste and decency on radio and TV. The BSC will also draw-up codes for broadcasters on the standards to be observed, monitor and report on the portrayal of violence and sexual conduct, and commission and publish research into public attitudes.

The Secretary of State for National Heritage has appointed 13 members of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission and Broadcasting Standards Council to the new amalgamated Commission.
