AA Asks MPs To Resist Tobacco Ban
The Advertising Association has written to MPs urging them not to implement a total tobacco advertising ban. The letter aks MPs not to draft policy from “assumption and assertion” and criticises emotive calls for a ban from people who have not attempted to research the effect of advertising on tobacco consumption.
The AA points out that in the 6 OECD countries implementing a total ban on tobacco advertising, consumption is higher than in countries without a ban. The letter goes on to say that the UK’s tobacco consumption has decreased by almost 30% in 10 years. The letter is concluded with a plea to MPs “not to support the EC Directive to ban all forms of tobacco advertising with no serious evidence linking advertising to total market consumption.”
