ABC Auditors Postponed Until 1997
The Audit Bureau of Circulations, ABC, has announced that its proposed plans for introducing ABC staff auditors for consumer press audits have been postponed, from 1 January 1996 to 1 January 1997 at the earliest.
In what the ABC calls the most fundamental of all changes in recent years to the system for auditing consumer circulation figures, all ABC audits will be conducted by ABC’s full-time audit staff only; this means that member publishers will no longer be permitted to employ the services of an independent auditor, but will instead be directly responsible for preparing their unaudited circulations returns to the ABC who will then audit them at a later date. The objective behind the proposal is to achieve a truly comparable and cost effective audit.
The proposal is in the review process, and, say the ABC, if staff auditors are introduced, it will only be after the acceptance of a detailed fully costed proposal.
