ABC Downsizes Guardian Circulation Figure

The ABC has removed several thousand copies from the average net circulation figures for the Guardian and Observer newspapers, after a routine inspection revealed problems with copies claimed under “multiple copy sales”.

The figure for August 2001 to January 2002, which was previously reported as 416,066, a 4.65% year on year increase, has been revised to 410,038, a 3.13% year on year increase. The figure for the same period for the Observer has been cut from 472,673, a 6.64% year on year increase, to 461,752, a 4.18% increase.

It is thought that the copies concerned were those placed in health clubs. ABC has issued the following statement: “As the result of a routine inspection of the Guardian and the Observer it was found that a number of copies claimed under the ‘multiple copy sales’ category infringed the ABC audit rules. As a result their certificates have been re-issued, removing these copies from the circulation claims.”
