ABC results for the six-month period ending June 2002 reveal a relatively lacklustre performance from teen titles. Year on year analysis of the teenage market reveals an overall decline for the sector, with a slight drop in overall circulation.
High profile J17 was the sector’s biggest loser falling 33.77%. Attic Futura’s Sugar held onto the top spot, despite a slight drop in circulation it remained well ahead of the competition.
BBC’s Top of the Pops magazine continued to suffer, declining by 16.5% year on year. While Emap’s pop magazine stalwart Smash Hits continued to see circulation fall.
In a busy period for teen titles, there were two launches and two closures; Cosmogirl reported a solid set of ABC fugures, expanding National Magazines Company’s share of the teenage market. However, BBC’s Star magazine, a teen version of Hello, failed to capture the market and closed. Elsewhere Attic Futura’s CD:UK magazine is no doubt hoping to succeed where BBC’s Live & Kicking, now cancelled, failed.
