![]()
The latest ABC consumer magazine figures for the July to December 2002 period confirm the extent of the current obsession with the lives or the rich and famous, with significant increases in circulation for weekly celebrity focussed titles.
As expected IPC’s Now magazine recorded an impressive 14% year on year increase in circulation to 630,212, confirming the success of its mix of high-profile interviews, gossip and real world features. Chat‘s take on the celebrity scene also paid off for IPC and the title recorded a 15.6% year on year increase, lifting its circulation to above 550,000.
The run away success of Emap’s Heat showed no signs of slowing in the six months to December 2002 and the title recorded a massive 56.1% year on year increase, taking its circulation to 554,644, up from 355,304 in the same period the previous year.
The women’s monthly sector also saw some healthy growth, with Condé Nast’s Glamour continuing its rapid rise. The relative newcomer to the sector recorded a 23.1% year on year increase in circulation to 537,474, helping it to increase its lead over Natmags’ Cosmopolitan, which saw its circulation remain static at 463,058.
However, there was comfort elsewhere for Natmags, with Company seeing a 26.5% increase in circulation and Cosmopolitan Hair & Beauty experiencing a 20.5% increase during the same period.
Elsewhere, Emap’s market leading FHM saw circulation rise by 8.7% year on year to well above the 600,000 mark, while IPC’s Loaded proved less fortunate with a 6% dip in the six months to December 2002.
BBC Magazines’ It’s Hot and Emap’s Sneak provided a boost to the notoriously fickle teen sector, entering the market with respective circulations of 104,015 and 86,535.
Meanwhile, the success of Emap’s rock music title Kerrang! continued with a 9.5% year on year increase in circulation, while dance-focussed, Mixmag suffered a worrying 34.7% slump in the six months to December 2002.
