ABC National Newspaper Round-Up: August 2008

Newspapers Daily Newspaper Market

The daily national newspaper market showed a year on year dip in circulation of 4.2% overall in August, with the circulation figures for the titles in our analysis down across the board.

There were relatively large percentage falls for the Daily Express, Daily Mirror and Daily Star.

The Sun performed relatively well, with its circulation dipping just 0.3% year on year.

Quality Daily Titles

In the Quality sector, the Times and Independent were both down by around 4% year on year, leaving their respective circulations at around 613,000 and 230,000 copies.

The Daily Telegraph shed more than 27,000 copies year on year from its total – a percentage drop of around 3% – leaving its circulation at just under 860,500.

The Guardian now has a circulation of just under 333,000 copies following a year on year fall of 6.5%, while the Financial Times dipped by around 2% to under 418,000 copies.

Mid-Market Daily Titles

Mid-Market title the Daily Express suffered a year on year dip of 9.5%, leaving it with a circulation of almost 749,000 copies.

Down by around 3.5% year on year, the Daily Mail‘s circulation is a still impressive 2.3 million.

Popular Daily Titles

The Daily Star and Daily Mirror were down by 9% and 8% year on year respectively.

The Daily Star now has a circulation of around 751,500, while the Daily Mirror‘s is just under 1.5 million.

Compared to the rest of the market the Sun performed well, dipping by just 0.3% year on year, to leave its total at around 3.1 million copies.

Scottish title the Daily Record was not so fortunate, with a year on year decline of around 6.5%. Its circulation now rests at just over 390,000.

Sunday Newspaper Market

The Sunday market was down 6.9% year on year overall, with the Sunday Express and the Daily Star Sunday suffering pretty large year on year declines, of around 17% and 24.5% respectively.

Quality Sunday Titles

The Independent On Sunday and the Observer were both down by around 7% year on year in the quality sector, leaving them with circulations of around 197,000 and 411,000 respectively.

The Sunday Times was down by just under 3% year on year, to 1.1 million copies, while the Sunday Telegraph dipped 3.5% over the same period, to under 619,000 copies.

Mid-Market Sunday Titles

In the Sunday Mid-Market, the Sunday Express was down by a relatively large 16.9% year on year, leaving its circulation at 655,000.

The Mail On Sunday fared slightly better, with a fall of around 5.5% year on year – a real term decline of around 128,000 copies – leaving it with a circulation of under 2.2 million.

Popular Sunday Titles

The Popular sector saw a large decline for the Daily Star Sunday, down almost 24.5% year on year to around 404,000 copies.

The News Of The World‘s circulation is still very healthy at over 3.2 million, although it too suffered in August, with a drop of around 3.1% year on year.

The People‘s circulation now rests at nearly 649,500 after a year on year decline of around 12.5%, while an 8% fall means that the Sunday Mirror now has a total circulation figure of just over 1.3 million.
