ABC National Newspaper Round-Up: October 2011
The daily national newspaper market saw circulation figures drop once again in October – down by -1.2% PoP and -6.6% YoY overall.
Only two titles in the daily market posted an increase – the FT was up 0.1% PoP and i was up 14.7% PoP.
The Sunday market also saw circulation figures fall PoP (-2.0%) but increase 17.8% over the year (the year on year comparisons continue to be affected by the closure of News International’s News of the World).

Quality Daily Titles
- Two titles in the Quality market enjoyed PoP increases – the Financial Times and i
- The Independent suffered the biggest percentage drop – down -24.6% PoP and -26.8% YoY
- The Times saw the biggest actual loss, however, down by almost 62,000 copies YoY
- The Telegraph remains the top-selling title with a total circulation of 604,000 copies
Mid-Market Daily Titles
- Both titles in the Mid-Market posted a -0.5% PoP decline
- The Daily Mail also recorded a -6.2% YoY drop, taking its total below 2m copies
Popular Daily Titles
- All titles in the tabloid market posted YoY and PoP declines
- The Daily Star suffered the biggest percentage drop, down -17.0% YoY
- However, The Sun posted the biggest actual fall – down by more than 188,000 copies over the year
- The Sun remains the top-selling daily title with a circulation of over 2.7m copies

Quality Sunday Titles
- All of the Sunday broadsheets suffered YoY and PoP percentage declines
- The Independent saw a -15.2% YoY and PoP drop
- The Sunday Times remains the top-selling Sunday Quality with a total circulation of 968,000 copies
Mid-Market Sunday Titles
- The Mail on Sunday enjoyed a small 1.0% PoP increase (up by more than 20,500 copies) – taking it back over the 2m copies mark
- The Sunday Express, meanwhile, posted a 23.2% YoY rise
Popular Sunday Titles
- All three Sunday red-tops enjoyed YoY increases (although all three also posted PoP declines)
- The Daily Star Sunday enjoyed a 97.9% YoY rise, while the People recorded a 58.1% YoY increase
- However, the Sunday Mirror remains in the lead with a total circulation of 1.77m copies after a 56.5% YoY jump
