Today’s ABC release paints a fairly poor picture for the regional newspaper market, with all but one newspaper group in our analysis posting percentage declines in the January to June period.

MEN Weekly Free Newspapers Group was the only regional group to record a PoP increase; while two titles in the Top 10 regional list (by circulation) enjoyed increases.

This period has seen 41 closures and 9 mergers within the regional newspaper market.

Regional Newspaper Groups

  • MEN Weekly Free Newspapers Group enjoyed a positive 1.9% PoP rise – up more than 10,000 sales
  • North East Press Ltd posted the biggest PoP decline, down -26.7% (almost 60,000 copies)
  • Northcliffe Media Group – Free Titles saw the biggest actual drop, down by 467,000 copies
  • KM Extra Group (Kent) also took a fairly big hit – down by more than 38,000 copies

Regional Newspaper Titles

  • The Edinburgh & Lothian Herald & Post provided the only positive story in the regional market (by titles) – up by 14.5% PoP (an increase of over 11,000 sales)
  • The Nottingham & Long Eaton Topper is the most-read title with a total circulation of 212,000  despite being down -0.2% PoP
  • Sentinel Advertiser suffered the biggest actual drop in the period – losing more than 9,000 copies (-9.7% PoP)
