AC Nielsen Names 43 Global Mega Brands

AC Nielsen has named the 43 brands which it claims are the only ones to achieve annual sales of US$1bn and which can be considered “truly global brands”, but predicts that more will join the list in future. At the top of the “mega brands” league is Coca Cola. Only one UK brand- Guinness is on the list, and only seven other European brands.

Jane Perrin, managing director of global services at AC Nielsen, said: “Despite the proliferation of brands in the marketplace and a focus by major manfacturers on being more global, there are relatively few global mega brands out there. We looked at well over 200 brands in this study and although more than half had a global presence, they just didn’t have over a billion dollars in sales. Over the next few years we expect this picture to change dramatically.”

The study, Reaching the Billion Dollar Mark, were based on data from 30 countries which accounted for 90% of the world’s gross domestic product. It found that 23 manufacturers were behind the 43 brands. Eight of these companies had more than one brand on the list, including Pepsico, which, with six brands, had the most.
