Ad Industry Is Small But Important, Says IPA

Bruce Haines, president of the IPA, has reiterated the organisation’s feelings that the upcoming broadcast legislation must protect the the competitiveness of the media market place, regulate the BBC against a more defined public service remit and safeguard and promote quality programming to attract audiences.

Haines’ comments were made in the foreword to the IPA 2001 Annual Report, published yesterday. He said: “Although we [the advertising and marketing communications industry] are a small industry in terms of size and income, the fact is that media adspend funds over 50% of the nation’s viewing and is an integral driver of the UK’s consumer led economy.”

He continued: “The structure of our new digital world and the relationship between the commercial channels and the BBC is vitally important to us because the advertising industry will end up paying for much of the resulting structure.”

The report summarises the achievements and research of the past year and details the organisation’s ambitions for 2002 and is available from the IPA.
