Agency Employment Figures Fall
The 1997 IPA Census shows there were 12,700 people employed at 206 IPA member agencies in 1997, compared to 12,800 at 220 IPA member agencies the previous year.
A number of advertising agency mergers and acquisitions is reflected in a slightly reduced IPA membership base, but the figures also reveal that ad agencies are becoming larger employers, with the average number of people employed per member agency rising from 58 to 62.
Advertising also continues to be a young person’s industry with 51% of all staff being under the age of 30, and 82% of staff being under the age of 40. Women currently represent 20% of board directors, 41% of other heads of department and 49% of staff. This compares to 20%, 44% and 48% in 1996.
