Airc Calls For AM To FM Conversion

Stewart Francis, chairman of the Association of Independent Radio Companies, has called for the FM frequencies in the 105-108MHz band to be used to enable existing AM services to convert to FM.

These frequencies will become available to the Radio Authority in 1996. In the Annual AIRC report, Stewart Francis says that the decision on how to use the extra frequencies is the most important the Authority will have had to make and will shape the future of Independent Radio.

He believes that if the band is used to licence more commercial radio stations it will weaken the precarious balance between success and failure that currently exists.

However he beleives that AM to FM conversion would boost Independent Radio’s share of audience overnight.
