Alcohol Sponsorship Ban Threatened

British sport could face a ban on alcohol sponsorship if the French government is successful in pushing for a Europe-wide extension of its own anti-alcohol advertising laws.

According to today’s Guardian, French officials are pressing the European Commission to make alcohol sponsorship and advertising illegal. French laws have already caused a row this year with Budweiser, which is one of the main sponsors of this year’s World Cup. Due to the ‘Loi Evin’ the American brewer has been forced to sell its stadium hording space to Casio.

British sports which would be threatened by a ban include rugby union (Heineken European Cup, Tetley Bitter Cup), football (Carling Premiership, Bell’s Scottish League) and tennis (Stella Artois competition).
