Alliance & Leicester Carry Out Christmas Survey

Alliance & Leicester Carry Out Christmas Survey

Research by Alliance & Leicester’s credit card division shows that consumers of all ages and retailers alike have high expectations of Christmas 1996.

It reveals for example that today’s pensioners are likely to embrace new technology: while PCs and an Internet connection are definitely not on the Christmas list, satellite TV, microwave ovens and mobile/cordless ‘phones are now popular choices for what the survey dubs “new granny”.

Fourteen and fifteen year olds are likely to want £320 Sony and Sega games machines, £1,500 multimedia computers and a range of sound and interactive video equipment. Outdoor presents for this group prove cheaper, with requests for £30 in-line skates, £40 snakeboards, authentic football strips for £55 and ‘designer’ mountain bikes at £300 plus.

Advice from lingerie stores shows that Natural Gossard glossies are popular at £14.50; simple Calvin Klein underwear beats corsets and basques while the ultimate gift is probably a £60 gold bra with brocade. For men in their twenties velvet animal print boxer shorts £14.99 are popular and Y-fronts are a safe bet for all men. A £2,500 massage mattress is also predicted to be a popular gift this year.
