Amol Rajan has been named as the new editor of The Independent, becoming Fleet Street’s first non-white newspaper editor. Previously the paper’s comment editor, he replaces Chris Blackhurst who moves on to a managerial role.

Lisa Markwell has also been appointed editor of The Independent on Sunday, having previously been executive editor.

Blackhurst is now group content director, overseeing editorial output and content creation across the newspapers, the website, and London Live TV, to be launched next spring.
