Andrew Mullins, managing director of the London Evening Standard, has been appointed managing director of the Independent and Independent on Sunday.

Mullins, who remains Evening Standard MD, has also been appointed to the board of Independent Print Ltd.

He replaces Simon Kelner, who was today confirmed as permanent editor of the Independent, as MD of the Independent titles.

It is Kelner’s second spell as editor – he first took on the role in 1998 and oversaw the transition to the compact format in 2003.

Andreas Whittam Smith, founder of the Independent, has also joined the board of Independent Print Ltd.

Evgeny Lebedev, chairman of Independent Print Ltd, said: “Simon Kelner is appointed editor of the Independent, and has also been appointed a director of Independent Print Ltd. He remains editor-in-chief of the Independent titles.

“I am delighted to appoint such a talented editor and great newspaperman who is committed to bringing his unique style and energy to edit the Independent.”
