Andrew Neil Confirms Express Bid

Andrew Neil, former editor of the Sunday Times has confirmed today that he is putting together a bid for the Express Newspapers. Neil has raised around £300 million to try to buy the titles, despite constant denials from United News and Media that they are not for sale.

Andrew Neil, speaking today on BBC Radio confirmed weekend press reports. He said he had managed to raise £300m, but this will not all go on the bid, “Tens of millions” would be needed to improve editorial content, he said. Lord Stevens, chairman of United News and Media has said he will only sell the titles if he receives an offer so large that he has no alternative. Andrew Lloyd Webber is also interested in buying the Express titles.

The Daily Express and Sunday Express both now have new editors; Richard Addis of the Daily Mail is to become editor of the Daily Express and Susan Douglas is moving from the Sunday Times to edit the Sunday Express.
