Annual Radio Revenue Breaks The Half Billion Barrier

Revenue for commercial radio has broken the £½billion revenue threshold, showing year-on-year growth of 17.8% for the year to June 2000, an increase of £77m to a total £510m, according to the latest figures from the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB).

Quarterly figures showed even more spectacular growth. The £104.2m of national advertising revenue recorded for April to June this year represented 40.3% growth on the same period last year. Overall revenue for quarter 2 this year was £141m, representing 25.6% growth compared to last year. National revenue therefore accounted for 74% of all income.

Justin Sampson, RAB managing director commented, “April-June saw very strong advertiser demand. Euro 2000 and the dot-com effect were two factors but increased investment from established advertisers demonstrates that underlying growth remains very robust.”

The biggest spending sector of national advertisers is entertainment and the media. Advertisers in this category spent a total of £20m during the April to June quarter. The dot com sector has now moved into second place, spending just under £19m in the same time period.
