AOL Boosts Interactive Marketing Team

AOL UK has appointed Greg Paine to the newly created role of director of strategy for interactive marketing.

Before joining AOL Paine was media director at McCann-Erickson Russia and prior to this he was general manager of Universal McCann Warsaw.

In his new position Paine will take responsibility for sales strategy, planning research and trade marketing. He will report to Andy Jonesco, vice president of interactive marketing for AOL UK, who commented: “Greg’s experience in planning and buying traditional media will prove an invaluable asset in putting online into context with other media. We’ve got as many subscribers as some of my ex-newspapers have circulation, so online should be at the heart of every media plan. I recognise it’s up to us to make it happen and Greg’s appointment is one of the many steps we’ll take to fulfil this objective.”

Paine added: “This is a very exciting time to be joining such a key media player as AOL. The internet looks set to be the fastest growing advertising medium in 2003 and my media planning experience will help us ensure that advertisers and agencies are aware of the opportunities available to increase their advertising presence and accountability using a combination of online and traditional media.”

The new appointment reflects AOL UK’s commitment to expanding its online ad revenue, the group is one of a number of high profile internet companies to have joined the Internet Advertising Bureau’s (IAB) initiative to double the size of the online ad market in two years (see IAB Plans To Double Internet Ad Spend In Two Years).

However, Paine will be joining AOL at a volatile time, the group’s America Online internet division has been plagued by accusations of financial irregularities and is currently under investigation in the US.

Earlier this week, Steve Case, the beleaguered chairman of AOL Time Warner, bowed to increasing pressure and announced his intention to step down in the spring (see AOL Chairman Quits Following Shareholder Unrest). Case engineered the much criticised merger with Time Warner, and has presided over a 70% fall in share price since the merger.
