AOL May Launch Free Net Access In Britain

The world’s largest online internet service, America Online, has announced it is considering plans to launch a free web access product in Britain. AOL Europe said it was considering a variety of models for Internet access and is likely to announce further details within the next month.

David Phillips, managing director of AOL’s UK operation, said: “If the free services model proves to be a viable, niche-market business, then AOL UK is ideally positioned to successfully enter this sector with its multi-brand strategy.”

Dixons’ Freeserve is currently the UK’s largest free ISP, holding a 31% share in the market, according to Fletcher Research’s Internet Access Strategies report (see ‘Fickle’ Net Users Flock To Free ISPs). In this report Fletcher says: “Pay services face a key challenge over the coming months to convince their existing subscribers to maintain the service, let alone recruit more subscribers.”
