Apple moves forward with development of tabletop robotic home device

Apple is reportedly accelerating development of a novel home device featuring an iPad-like display mounted on a robotic arm, according to Bloomberg News. Codenamed J595, the project is envisioned as a multifunctional hub for smart home control, video conferencing, and even remote-controlled home security.

Home device with a twist – its robotic arm

The device would compete with existing smart displays like Amazon’s Echo Show 10, but with a unique twist – its robotic arm. This arm would allow the screen to tilt, swivel, and even rotate a full 360 degrees, according to Bloomberg News.

Internally, the project has been in the works for several years, but faced hurdles related to software development and marketing concerns. However, with CEO Tim Cook and hardware engineering chief John Ternus championing the project, it appears to be gaining momentum. Apple is reportedly targeting a release date as early as 2026 or 2027, with a price tag around $1,000.

Siri takes center stage

The core functionality is expected to be driven by Apple’s Siri digital assistant and upcoming features within Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI technologies, said Bloomberg News. The device could potentially respond to voice commands like “look at me” by adjusting the screen’s position during video calls or recognize and adapt to different voices in the room.

The hardware development is led by Matt Costello, who spearheaded the Apple HomePod project.

Diversify its revenue stream

This tabletop robot represents one of several avenues Apple is pursuing to diversify its revenue stream beyond the iPhone, which still accounts for roughly half of the company’s sales.

Although Apple has enjoyed immense success with its smartphone, recent quarters have seen sluggish sales. And the upcoming September launch of new iPhone models with improved cameras, processors, and displays won’t help as it is expected to generate modest growth. With this in mind, Apple is clearly looking for long-term growth opportunities in new product categories.
