April ABCs: Mirror and Sun record circulation boosts

Daily market

April was a tough month for the daily newspaper market with only three titles recording any uplift in circulation figures from the previous month.

The Daily Mirror and the Sun, both in the popular market, managed to boost circulations, up 0.4% and 1%, respectively.

For the Daily Mirror that equated to just 2,400 extra papers, while the Sun dished out an extra 14,700. The Sun is still the most popular daily newspaper with a healthy circulation of almost 1.5 million.

Meanwhile, freebie Metro (total UK footprint) was up just 0.1%.

Elsewhere, across all markets, titles recorded declines. The worst performance in April was recorded by the Guardian, down almost -4% to a total of 142,300.

The Daily Express was down by -3% to 346,300 and the Daily Star down -2.8% to 384,400.

The entire market was down -0.6% in April and -8.6 over the year.

Sunday market

It was a similar picture in the Sunday market with all but four titles down.

In the mid market the Mail on Sunday was up just 0.5%, taking its circulation to over 1 million, while in the popular market the Sunday People, the Sun on Sunday and the Sunday Mirror were all up.

Overall, the entire Sunday market was up 0.3% between March and April, but was down -11.4% year on year.

London Free Press

The capital’s free press had nothing to worry about, with a total of 1.86m papers handed out, a drop of just -0.6% on February.

City A.M. was up 0.3%; The Evening Standard was down -0.1%; and the Metro remained was up 0.2%.
