April Cinema Admissions Down 17.5% Year On Year

Latest data from the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) shows that April 1999 admissions were down 17.5% year on year, from 12.1 million to 10.0 million. However, this is slightly higher than March’s 9.9 million admissions. Average weekly admissions for April were 2.34 million, according to the CAA.

The most popular film in April was The Rugrats Movie which took £8 million at the box office. Cinema sales house, Carlton Screen Advertising, says that the lack of blockbusters targeting 15-34 year olds and the compounding success of Titanic last year have resulted in a slow start to this year’s admissions.

CSA is expecting July, however, to break the records with the release of the much-anticipated Star Wars installment, The Phantom Menace. In its first five days of release in the US the film broke all records taking $105.7 million.
