April Cinema Admissions Up 22%

The latest cinema admissions figures, for April, show weekly admissions for the month averaged 2.65m a week, up 22% on the same month last year and the highest April weekly average since 1974. The highest grossing weeks were at the beginning of April, with big films like Toy Story and Sense & Sensibility still attracting big audiences.

Toy Story was the top grossing film for the second month in succession; there was also continuing success from Sense & Sensibility and Trainspotting, and the more recent Broken Arrow and Twelve Monkeys.

Admissions for the first four months of this year totalled 47.8 million, 30% up on the same period last year and 9% up on 1994. Interim estimates for May indicate at least a 16% year on year rise, according to Cinema Media, who also predict that this year’s success will continue throughout the summer with the release of films such as Mission Impossible, Twister and The Hunchback of Notredame. In the American box office Mission Impossible broke opening week records set by Jurassic Park to take $72.2 million.
