ASA Monthly Round-Up

The ASA reported this month that complaints regarding promotional features for The Sun and Daily Mirror were being upheld. The Daily Mirror offered a saving of up to £150 on a theme park holiday: the Authority said that readers were not aware of terms and conditions until they had bought the next three issues of the paper and warned the promoters that it should not happen again. A similar offer was in The Sun where it claimed that “£9.50 holidays are back.” Again the ASA said that full details should have been made available from the outset of the promotion.

The Daily Mirror had also offered readers the chance to fly to Amsterdam for 29p but, the ASA noted, had not mentioned that only 300 seats were available. They advised the promoters to pay closer attention to the Codes’ requirement for future offers.

There was an industry complaint by the Leicester Mercury Group regarding the Leicester Ad-Mag’s front page statement, “Leicester’s Best Selling Free Ads Paper.” The complaint was upheld as sufficient backing could not be provided in support of the claim. The ASA asked them not to use it again.
