ASA Upholds Complaint Against Rover

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint against a Rover Group television commercial on the grounds that it could encourage irresponsible driving.

The advert depicted a blurred car travelling on a country road, and compared driving the car with getting older with the voice-over saying: ” Before you know it your knocking on 60. Life can certainly pass you by at an alarming rate.” The advert also claimed its takes 6.9 seconds to go 60 miles per hour in a Rover Car.

The ASA recieved 2 complaints from members of the public who felt the advert was likely to encourage speeding and dangerous driving.

The advertisers believed the commercial did not encourage speeding or dangerous driving as 60 miles-per-hour is within the national speed limit. The ASA advised the advertisers not to repeat the approach.
