James Cameron’s 3D science-fiction epic Avatar continues to dominate cinemas across the country.
The film took over £4.8 million at the box office last weekend (8th – 10th January), which takes its UK total to over £40 million and its worldwide total revenue to $1.34 billion.
As its box office revenues continue to soar across the globe, it is now officially the second-highest-grossing film of all time after Cameron’s last epic film Titanic, which took a massive $1.84 billion.
Avatar, which has captured British cinema-goers since its premiere in mid-December, is expected to take the lead again this weekend (15th – 17th January), despite competition from new films such as The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington, 44 Inch Chest by the makers of Sexy Beast and All About Steve with Sandra Bullock.
Last weekend, the 3D film faced stiff competition from newcomer Day Breakers, which went straight into third place in its opening weekend with takings of £1.3 million in the UK alone. The vampire thriller, starring Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill, is expected to be a big hit for directors Michael and Peter Spierig.
