Base Rates Increased By 0.5%

The Bank of England has increased its base rate by 0.5%; it now stands at 6.25%.

The rise comes after Chancellor Kenneth Clarke’s monthly meeting with the Governor of the Bank of England. The base rate rise was in line with the policy of keeping inflation down, said Clarke; and he saw no reason to delay the rise as he wanted to avoid uncertainty in the financial markets.
