BAT Set To Dodge Tobacco Ad Bans
British American Tobacco is rumoured to be planning to buy a Formula 1 motor racing team in a bid to escape the tobacco advertising ban which will be implemented by the new Labour government.
BAT would have to spend around £175m to become involved in this side of the sport and Marketing magazine names racing car maker Reynard and F1 team Minardi as possible partners for the venture which would be called British American Racing for the 1999 season.
However, because the exact nature of the advertising ban has not been finalised it is unknown whether this ploy would successfully circumvent any new law.
