Bauer shakes up music portfolio leadership

The editor-in-chief of Mojo and Kerrang! magazines, Phil Alexander, has also assumed responsibility for music monthly Q, extending his remit across Bauer Media’s music brands, it has been announced.

Senior editor Matt Mason, who has been working with Bauer’s executive content director Jane Johnson in leading the Q editorial team, will continue to run the day-to-day operation and will now report to Alexander.

Q plays a huge role in UK music and there’s more that it can do,” said Alexander. “We expect it to grow and evolve. I look forward to helping Matt and a team that is full of talented people do that.

“No one reaches more music fans in the UK than Q, Mojo and Kerrang!. The three brands are the crown jewels of UK music publishing and we believe that there are a large number of opportunities for all three.

“Our aim is to examine these and to ensure that we are making new things for audiences that truly love music.”

The latest ABC results for the July – December 2013 period show Bauer’s music portfolio had an average combined circulation of 162,111, down from 183,717 for the same period in 2012.

Currently, Mojo is the biggest seller of the three titles, with an average circulation of more than 74,000.

Bauer said Alexander and the team will also ensure that the music magazines collaborate with the company’s portfolio of rock radio stations which includes Absolute, Planet Rock and Kerrang! Radio.

“There are lots of opportunities to work with our colleagues in radio and to create genuinely unique programming based on high quality editorial,” said Alexander, who currently presents Mojo Rocks, a weekly show on Planet Rock.

“Once again, Bauer is in a unique position to deliver genuinely exciting cross-platform ideas.”

Alexander assumes his new role with immediate effect, reporting to publisher David Bostock.
