BBC And Satellite Show Improvements

BBC And Satellite Show Improvements

The IPA has published its Trends in Viewing Report for the first quarter of 1994; the report highlights the decline in the overall amount of television viewed. The share of live viewing achieved by the terrestrial commercial channels shows a slight rise on the previous quarter, but a drop when compared with the same quarter of 1993. The commercial share of all (including non-terrestrial) consolidated viewing shows the same pattern.

BBC1 has improved on shaky viewing figures last year, when share dropped to 30%; it is now achieving a share of 32-33% regularly. ITV continues to lose share very slightly, hovering around the 40% mark. The share taken by satellite channels appears to have regained some of its upward momentum, at 12.1%

The profile of ITV viewing by age continues to mirror the profile of all television viewing, except for the social class profile, which continues to be relatively down-market.

The overall patronage figure for ITV (that is the percentage of the population tuning to a channel for at least three minutes during the week) has increased steadily for 1993 and 1994, rising to 94.7%. BBC 2 was the only channel to lose patronage, decreasing to 82.8% The biggest growth was from satellite channels, increasing to 18.2%
