BBC Announces European Launch Details

The BBC and Pearson have announed details of the two new satellite channels launching in January to Europe. Both channels, BBC Prime and BBC World, are due to launch on 26 January.

BBC Prime, a 24 hour entertainment channel replaces the BBC’s existing European general programming channel; it will continue to transmit on Intelsat VI as an encrypted subscription funded service. BBC Prime will be an entertainment channel, focussing on drama, comedy, light entertainment, natural history and children’s programmes. 75% of the schedule will come from BBC programmes, with the other 25% from Thames.

BBC World will be a 24 hour international news and information channel, targetting a European audience wdith in-depth news programming at key times of the day. The schedule will also feature current affairs series, documentaries and topical factual magazines. BBC World will be funded by advertising, and will transmit without encryption on the Eutelsat II F1 satellite.

BBC Worldwide Chairman Bob Phillis said, “Both channels have been designed to meet the demands of a sophisticated audience, and we believe they will fill a gap in the market.”

Advertising sales for BBC World are being managed by IP Network-TSMS Ltd – a joint venture between TSMS and IP Network.
