BBC Announces Its Boost To Drama

The BBC has announced it is to spend £49 million in an attempt to equal ITV’s recent drama successes, by launching twelve new drama series. “The shows will be seen over the next two years and are part of a major investment in popular drama for BBC1”, Nick Elliot Head of Drama, said.

Nick Elliot revealed the programming details yesterday. “Ian McShane leaves behind Lovejoy to play a convicted murderer trying to clear his name, in Madson; Amanda Burton abandons her rural peak practice to become a police pathologist in Silent Witness; and Stephanie Beacham casts aside the shoulder pads of Dynasty to play the elegant Dorothea Hamilton in the wartime family saga, No Bananas.”

Among the writers are Alan Plater, Malcolm Bradbury, Keith Dewhurst, Kieran Prendeville, and Douglas Livingstone.

Favourites such as Casualty and Eastenders will continue their long running success in new series.
