BBC Digital Radio Achieves Target Coverage Of 60%
The BBC has confirmed that transmitter coverage of its digital radio services, using Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), can now reach 60% of the UK population. There are 27 transmitters in operation for the BBC’s national DAB multiplex as planned.
Coverage extends from the West and South East of England to the Midlands and the more heavily populated areas of Northern England, central Scotland, South Wales and Northern Ireland.
The BBC, along with a number of commercial stations (including Virgin, Talk and Capital), have been transmitting their existing analogue services on DAB since September 1995 (subscribers see Virginia Bottomley – DAB Approval). Using the extra capacity that the multiplex provides, the BBC has also been experimenting with other service formats (15 pilots have been trialled to date) and multimedia enhancements to programmes.
