BBC Ends Arabic Service

BBC Ends Arabic Service

BBC Worldwide has confirmed that it will be terminating its Arabic service which broadcasts eight hours a day of television to the Middle East.

The satellite service, called BBC Arabic Television and launched last summer, was provided by Orbit Satellite Television as a subscription service to viewers in the Middle East and North Africa.

The service is to be axed because of disagreements between BBC Worldwide and Orbit over the case of Saudi dissident Dr Mohammed al-Masari and also the broadcast of a Panorama programme showing executions in Saudi Arabia.

The BBC said that “both parties wish to see the existing channel maintained until separation terms are agreed and to permit an orderly wind down of the service.”
