The BBC is to collaborate with BT on its video on demand plans; trials are due to begin early next year in Essex, among 60 households.
The system will enable subscribers to choose videos which could in turn be transmitted directly to the subscriber through means of the telephone lines.
BBC Enterprises has agreed to supply the service with some programmes, although the BBC has not made any long term commitment.
