BBC Launches World Service On Freeview

The BBC’s World Service has been added to the range of digital TV, radio and interactive services available on the new Freeview platform, which launches tomorrow (see Freeview Digital Service Will Launch This Month).
The international news and information radio service, which will be available on Freeview channel 80, joins 11 digital radio stations and around 30 digital TV channels on the new free-to-air digital terrestrial television platform (see BBC And BSkyB Name Free-To-Air DTT Service).
Commenting on the launch, Mark Bryford, director of BBC World Service, said: “Until recently it’s been easier to hear the BBC World Service in Dhaka Singapore or Lima than in Belfast, Cardiff or Glasgow.”
He added: “Our new presence on the Freeview digital platform, added to our recent availability via digital satellite, digital radio and online, means even more of the people who fund us, taxpayers in the UK, can benefit from and enjoy the service.”
Freeview, which is being launched by a consortium comprising the BBC, BSkyB and Crown Castle, will replace the now defunct ITV Digital (see ITV Digital Will Be Sold As ‘Going Concern’). The BBC has been working to strengthen the digital terrestrial signal to increase Freeview’s coverage. However, one in four households will not be able to receive the service at all (see One In Four Households Will Not Receive New DTT Service).
