The BBC News application, for the iPhone and iPad, has been downloaded over 560,000 times in the first week of its launch.

The free app, released last week, immediately went to the top of iTunes most popular apps.

Since its release, the BBC News app has been rated by over 2,300 people. It currently has an average score of three out of five stars.

Criticism received regarding the app has concentrated on the fact that the live BBC News Channel video stream has failed to work.

However, many users have praised the BBC’s app, despite it receiving complaints from the NPA.

In the future, the BBC plan to develop the app to include BBC Local News and 3G video functionality, allowing people to stream the TV service without the need for wifi connectivity.
