Newcastle United’s first game in the Championship was a big draw for BBC One on Saturday evening, bringing in a peak of four million viewers.

With an average of 3.2 million viewers, the 1-1 draw between Newcastle and West Brom was easily Saturday afternoon’s most watched terrestrial programme.

Following straight on from the soccer at 7.30pm was anarchic gameshow Total Wipeout, which grabbed a peak of 5.4 million viewers – a 30.4% share of the audience.

The big shows on ITV1 on Saturday were perennial favourite Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? at 8.30pm and A Touch of Frost at 930pm.

Millionaire had a peak audience of 4.4 million viewers (a 23.6% share) with an average of 3.9 million viewers staying tuned for its hour running time.

Frost, meanwhile, started with a peak of 3.7 million viewers (a 19.8% share), although this figure gradually decreased as the show got nearer to midnight.
