BBC Open To Political Influence
According to the Institute for Public Policy Research, the BBC is too open to political influence. In a discussion paper The Future of the BBC the IPPR says that the Corporation, as the country’s largest quango, must be free from political influence.
The IPPR says that it can not be truly independent as long as the Government appoints its governors; the public should have a say in appointing them, and suggests an electoral college appointed by viewers and listeners groups and citizens’ juries which would keep elected governors in touch with the views of the public.
The paper, released today to coincide with the debate in Parliament by MPs on the White Paper The Future of the BBC also recommends that the BBC be more free to pursue business opportunities. The commercial and public service units should be split into a separate limited liability company.
