BBC Plans To Launch 24-Hour Internet News

The BBC Online department will launch a 24-hour news service on its Internet site next month. A BBC spokeswoman said that it is the BBC’s aim to provide continuous news in response to research which confirms that this is what people want. It is reported that the Corporation is putting £10m a year into a variety of online programming in order to capture a younger audience.

Eric Briffa, head of BBC Online, said that the service would form a platform for the Corporation’s venture into interactive programming. Following criticism that the BBC was using licence payers’ money to compete with Internet providers rather than for funding traditional programming, Briffa said that they must invest in Internet programming just as they had originally in television. The plans follow a 94 per cent growth in on-line usage this year.
