BBC Radio 1 Unveils Online Interactive Service

BBC Radio 1 has launched a new interactive service called Radio On Demand allowing listeners to access programmes via the station’s website.

For the first time selected Radio 1 shows will be available through BBCi for one week following broadcast, allowing internet users to listen to them whenever they choose. A specially designed Radio Player will provide a description of each show enabling users to browse through the range of output and select the shows they want to hear.

Ros Lawler, Radio 1 website manager, said: “The ground breaking radio on demand service genuinely puts Radio 1 at the fore of all music sites. It means that even more than before music is at the heart of what our site is about and that listeners have got total freedom over when they listen to specialist shows. It really puts the power in the hands of the Radio 1 audience.”

The Radio 1 website, www.bbc.co.uk/radio1, has been redesigned to accompany the launch and is now intended to reflect the character of the station’s programmes and its presenters. According to RAJAR data for the three months ending March 2002, BBC Radio 1 saw its weekly reach increase by 2% year on year to 10,541,000, up from 10,336,000 in the same period last year.

Last week Capital Radio launched an interactive radio service for mobile phone users. The service called CapitalM8 launches later this month allowing Capital FM listeners to receive ringtones, news, gig guides and dedicate tracks via their mobile phones (see Capital Unveils Interactive Radio Service).
