BBC Scores With England’s Disappointing Draw
![]()
BBC1 gained its highest Wednesday night audience for over a year last night with a peak of 10.6 million people tuning in for the England versus Macedonia Euro 2004 qualifier.
The average audience for the BBC’s coverage of the game was 9.3 million, which equates to a 39% share of viewing. Despite the record viewing figures England could only muster a disappointing 2-2 draw, partially due to a goalkeeping error from David Seaman.
According to the BBC, the game provided BBC1 with its highest Wednesday night audience since the England versus Albania game in September last year.
In spite of the football, ITV’s double helping of The Bill is understood to have attracted around 7 million viewers. However, just 1.3 million viewers are thought to have tuned into to see last night’s episode of Channel 4’s highly publicised Faking It series.
Last Saturday BBC1 gained an average audience of 8.5 million and achieved a 41.6% share of viewing for the England versus Slovakia game (see BBC Scores With England’s Victory Over Slovakia).
